The Big Biscuit Company is a rapidly growing business set up by two entrepreneurial brothers, Alex and Leo Baker. They identified a growing market for hand baked pet biscuits and the need for a business that could manufacture and produce a desirable product. Established two and a half years ago in Bordon, Hampshire the company used 4 semi-automatic linear weighers and sealing machines prior to purchasing an Intamac Packaging Systems IPS-8BT and multi-head weigher.
The upgrade to an automatic pouch filling machine has revolutionised The Big Biscuit Company’s business. Production output has increased by over 40%, enabling them to fulfil more contracts and giving them greater flexibility with their customers. There are also significant savings per pack, previously if they received a large order, with a short deadline, then the only option was to contract pack. This meant that the costs could quickly mount up and they had less control over schedules, whilst also eating into any margin, the IPS-8BT saves up to 80% on this option, per pouch.
Leo Baker, operations director, The Big Biscuit Company has seen both financial and logistical benefits, “As the business was growing we found ourselves having to use more and more agency staff to meet demand. This was both expensive and incredibly time consuming, Intamac has enabled us to reduce our labour overheads as we need less staff and fewer shifts.” He is also quick to point out that his permanent staff are more than happy with the change, “Our employees are delighted with the machine too. Previously packing was tiring and the constant training of agency staff frustrating. Now they have been able to take on different tasks and some of them are even enjoying running the machine.”
Tom Poston, sales executive, Intamac Packaging Systems worked closely with The Big Biscuit Company to find the perfect set up for their business. “It’s great to see the machine make such a difference to their manufacturing. The whole line has been in continual use since installation and the amount of giveaway is less than one biscuit per pouch – the multi-head weigher is incredibly accurate. Ultimately their customers are also now impressed by their set up and they are winning more business off the back of this.”
Baker also speaks highly of his interactions with Intamac, “We have enjoyed working with Intamac very much, from our first contact with Tom, to the sign off of the asset, we have felt like our best interests have been the focal point of Intamac’s agenda. We have already been looking at new projects with them and will continue to do so.”
