Biltong manufacturer expands and installs Intamac Packaging Systems VFFS machine to become fully automated.
Intamac Packaging Systems (Intamac) has installed a Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) packing machine at Simply African Foods, Bordon, Hampshire in May 2018. The machine is an IPS420E-SS with integrated 10 head multi-head, specially designed to pack dried goods for the snack food industry. In this instance the machine has been installed to pack a wide range of biltong.
Simply African Foods was established in 2002 by Donald Dodson, who discovered that traditional South African food was not produced to a high standard in the UK and saw the opportunity to rectify this whilst bringing biltong to a wider market. Many tastings later and the family had managed to develop a range of products that speak for themselves, with their authenticity and traditional mouth-watering taste.
The business is now truly successful, with orders from leading supermarkets and across the UK. The demand for these products meant that Simply African Foods needed to rapidly increase their production as efficiently as possible. It was on a cold Christmas Eve in 2017, at a Farmer’s Market in Petersfield, that they first learnt about Intamac and their VFFS pouch machine. Whilst sampling some delicious chilli biltong, Fran Bowes, of Intamac, realised that they needed to drastically increase their productivity and knew that Intamac had the perfect solution.
The driving force behind Simply African Foods is Donald’s son, Neil Dodson who has continued to grow the business. Neil realised that the opportunities were there to move onto the next level, from hand-packing to a fully automated system, and he believes that purchasing the machine is a turning point for Simply African Foods,
“We were initially concerned about the outlay on a packaging machine but the Intamac machinery is compact and great value. We’ve been able to remain in our current premises, train our great team to use the new machinery and worked closely with Intamac to create a bespoke solution.”
The machine has also enabled a number of cost savings including 15% on packaging costs over the coming year. “We have also been able to increase one of our key contracts from packing 700 packs a week to 9700 packs, and this is just the beginning.” Neil continues, “We have more buying power with our suppliers, in particular for meat and packaging – because we are producing so much more product to fulfil the new contracts that we have won since purchasing the machine.”
Tom Poston, sales executive for Intamac, understood Neil’s requirements from the offset. “When we first met with Neil we knew that he was our perfect customer! Running an exciting, growing business with a great product, looking to move onto the next level of production.” He continues, “We looked at their current production and what they wanted to achieve in the future and recommended the IPS420E-SS as the perfect solution. We can’t wait to see what Simply African Foods will achieve next, now that we have installed the machine”
